There are venues, and then there are venues that take your breath away the moment you step inside. The Mount Without in Bristol is firmly in the second category, and photographing Abbie and Tony's wedding day here was, quite simply, one of those days that reminds me exactly why I love this job.
The Venue
If you haven't heard of The Mount Without, let me paint a picture for you. Tucked away in the heart of Bristol, this deconsecrated church is a photographer's dream. Peeling stone walls that tell centuries of stories, towering Gothic arches, ornate Victorian-tiled floors, and that extraordinary stained-glass window flooding the altar with violet and cobalt light. Dozens of pillar candles scattered throughout the space give the whole room a warm, flickering glow that no artificial lighting could ever replicate. It's romantic, atmospheric, and utterly unlike anywhere else in the city.
When couples ask me about unique Bristol wedding venues, The Mount Without is always near the top of my list.
Before the Guests Arrived
I always make a point of arriving early to a venue like this, and The Mount Without never disappoints. That empty altar, candlelight dancing against centuries-old stone, the stained glass blazing with violet and cobalt behind it is one of my favourite frames from the entire day. There's something almost otherworldly about the space before the day begins.
My second shooter, Evie, and I were ready and waiting as the guests began to arrive and the room filled with excitement and anticipation.
The Ceremony
Tony and his groomsmen were the first to take their places at the altar, three lads in sharp navy suits with sunshine yellow boutonnieres, standing against that iconic backdrop of candlelight and stained glass. The image speaks for itself.
Then came the little ones. The page boy and flower girl walked the aisle together hand in hand, one wide-eyed with wonder, the other clutching her sunflower bouquet with absolute concentration. Honestly, one of the most heartwarming moments of the day, and the reaction from the guests said it all.
And then Abbie appeared at the back of the church on her father's arm, and the entire room seemed to hold its breath. Walking down that long aisle with everyone she loves standing to either side, it's a moment I never tire of photographing. The scale of The Mount Without makes it even more powerful; that wide shot showing the full length of the nave, the congregation, and Abbie making her way towards Tony is one I know they'll treasure forever.
Celebrant Julia Anne
A truly great ceremony lives and dies by the person leading it, and Abbie and Tony were in the very best hands with their celebrant, Julia Anne. From the moment she began, it was clear this wasn't a generic, off-the-shelf ceremony. Julia had clearly taken the time to really get to know Abbie and Tony as a couple, weaving their story, their humour, and their love into every word.
The ceremony felt completely personal, warm, and at times wonderfully funny — the laughter from the congregation was genuine, and so were the tears. Julia held the room effortlessly, guiding the couple through their vows and ring exchange with such care and presence. If you're looking for a celebrant who will make your ceremony feel truly yours, I cannot recommend Julia Anne highly enough.
The vows and ring exchange took place beneath that magnificent stained glass window, candlelight all around them, with Julia by their side as two people promised themselves to each other for life. Every frame from those few minutes is pure gold.
Abbie and Tony sat together on the velvet chesterfield sofa during the readings, so relaxed, so happy, quietly soaking it all in. It's those in-between moments, the ones couples never quite remember clearly on the day, that I love capturing most.
A Note on The Mount Without
If you're considering this venue for your own wedding, I can't recommend it highly enough. It photographs beautifully in every light condition bright and airy for daytime ceremonies, moody and intimate once the candles are fully lit. The Gothic architecture gives you incredible natural framing at every angle, and the tiled floors add texture and warmth to every wide shot.
It's a venue with genuine soul, and that always makes for extraordinary photographs.
